A tragic day for the Deaf community

As some of you know, what happened on Wednesday, October 25th? For the past few days, after discovering what happened on that tragic day, I have been thinking over and over about what to say or how to express myself. But I have been unable to; I could not find the words because I have been left speechless or signless. Should I say something or express something about what had happened? Because if I did, it wouldn’t reverse what happened that day. What happened on that day was pure evil and hit too close to home. We are used to seeing something like that happen often everywhere. What happened on October 25th is common here in the United States, but October 25th was different. What I mean by common is that we are seeing a lot of mass shootings happening all over the United States, and that a lot of lives were taken away from them. But it was different on October 25th, 2023, because on that day, there was a mass shooting in Maine, and we thought to ourselves that it was another mass shooting that we were so used to hearing or seeing until we realized it wasn’t. On that day, there was a mass shooting in the state of Maine in Lewiston where a man named Robert…

Computers Made A Difference For A Deaf Child!

This is just a very small post for you all to read because this is more on a personal level than I normally write. For many years, I have been looking for pictures of myself when I was young, especially my accomplishments and whatnot. I do know that I was the first student to demonstrate a new computer with disc compact (CD) for Pike County schools in Kentucky; that is the newspaper that I am still in search of, but I have found an old VHS which I am working on figuring out how to transfer the VHS digitally. If so, I will show it around here or on social media. While we were going through old things such as pictures, VHS tapes, and whatnot, I finally found some newspapers with me in them. It was the talk of Pike County, Ky, because I was a student who happened to be Deaf student who was paving the way to get new computers for the students at my school when I was just five years old. During my time in grade school, I was five years old or around that age; when anyone thinks of someone who is a computer whiz, I would be it, and being Deaf is what made me so, which is something I am very thankful for.…

International Deaf Awareness Month

It is that time of the year again, as we are at the beginning of September in the year 2019 and it is the month of International Deaf Awareness Month! Every year in September is a celebration for the deaf and hard of hearing community but at the same time, we also use that opportunity or a platform to raise awareness to the public so as to educate the public about the community. Educating the public about many things that are valued in the Deaf community, such as its culture and as well each sign language. As for me here in United States, American Sign Language is not the only sign language because every country have their own country such as British Sign Language (BSL), Mexican Sign Language (LSM), Australia Sign Language (Auslan), French Sign Language (LSF), South African Sign Language (SASL), Korean Sign Language (KSL) and others so you get the idea that most of the countries have their own sign languages including the one here in the United States of America which is American Sign Language but the United States is not the only one county that use American Sign Language since Canada also use American Sign Language as one of their primary sign language along with another one which is Quebec Sign Language (LSQ). So, a lot…

Deaf Politician Has His Social Security Information Leaked

Some of you may know or may not know who Chris Haulmark is, before I go into it, I would like to share the introduction of who he is because this is important. Chris Haulmark was running for the district third (3rd) Congress in Kansas in the last election (2018 election) as a Democrat and then his advisors along with his citizens suggested that he run as a representative first so that he can get a taste of how the state government works so that way he can be better prepared to become a senator in the next election or two if his citizens think he did a good job as the house of representative in the state of Kansas. He took that advice, changed from third (3rd) district congressional to fifteen (15th) district representative for the state of Kansas and down the road in the election he won the Democratic nomination. Since then, he did a lot of doors knocking and making a vlog in American Sign Language (ASL) a day for 365 days campaigning on Chris Haulmark’s official campaign Facebook page. I even wrote a piece about him in one of my articles in the year 2017 when he was running for the Congress before making the decision to switch the position from Congress to a representative in…

We Are Deaf and Not Dumb

I am sure that some of you have heard of these words somewhere, whether it be auto-correction, on social media, in the news, in another country that doesn’t have much knowledge about the community as we do over here in the United States and as well some countries in Europe. By now if you haven’t realized what I am referring to by looking at the headline of this article then the words I am referring to is Deaf and Dumb or even Deaf and Mute. There was someone, who is Deaf found a words replacement suggestion in Nintendo’s store saying “Deaf and Dumb” and decided to share that on Reddit which I will provide a link to that Reddit at the end but he had shared his frustration or that he was surprised about the words replacement suggestion in Nintendo for “Deaf and Dumb” instead of Deaf in a Facebook group titled ASL That!. Asking the community about what he should respond or how to react to that, to the people’s comments in response to his concern about the “Deaf and Dumb” suggestion by Nintendo on Reddit but didn’t share the link to that part on Reddit which had me looking after the one that he was talking about so to get a better understanding of what people’s responding to…

Don’t Tell Deaf People To Read Lips

I think it’s getting to the point that we are fed up with the way of how people tell us to read their lips because they assume that every Deaf person can lipread when that isn’t even remotely true. I have seen it everywhere, this is common everywhere and it is more annoying than you think. It is acceptable if you would ask a Deaf or Hard of Hearing person if they can lipread but it is not acceptable and disrespectful to demand or to tell Deaf or Hard of Hearing people to lipread because not everyone can do so. Every Deaf and Hard of Hearing people have their preferred method of communications whether it be writing on a paper, demand an interpreter which by law they can require one, use a device such as a smartphone or a tablet to communicate with a hearing person or others that I have not thought of. I have seen some articles, videos and some people in the groups on Facebook or on social media share their experience where they were demanded to read lips but they cannot do so. Some would assume that anyone who is Deaf or Hard of Hearing have the ability to read the lips is a myth, it is tiresome for us come across the people who expect…

Alexander Graham Bell: Public Enemy of the Deaf

Some of you may not know this especially if you aren’t associated with the Deaf community and if you are indeed associated with the Deaf community or you are Deaf/Hard of Hearing yourself then there is a good possibility that you know this. If you aren’t associated with the Deaf/Hard of Hearing community or you are one of them then you already have a question in your mind wondering what or who am I referring to the public enemy of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing community but if you are associated with the community or you are one among of us as I am Deaf myself then you should by now already know that I am referring to Alexander Graham Bell being the public enemy of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing community. Now that I have mentioned that the name is Alexander Graham Bell, those who aren’t associated with or is Deaf/Hard of Hearing immediately recalls that Alexander Graham Bell is known for being a pioneer or an inventor as he invented landline telephone and some of you already know that he has been suspected of stealing the blueprint from Elisha Gray who came up with the mechanics in blueprint to build the first landline telephone that everybody today uses at home using dial-up connection. That wasn’t the only thing that Alexander…
