Thought?:
I think that is probably one of the most minimalist movies that I have seen, even though it is somewhat minimal, it would not bore you like some other minimal movies or some call it plain film. This movie is all about a character that is cast by Brad Pitt named Roy McBride, who is in search of his father named Clifford McBride that he and among others thought that he had already passed while he was on a mission in outer space looking for intelligent life. That father of the character acted by Brad Pitt (Roy McBride) that they had sent to search for his father is Tommy Lee Jones (Clifford McBride) while at the same time Roy McBride (starring Brad Pitt) is on a mission to solve the surge that kept on disrupting the electronics on earth.
The journey of Roy McBride starring Brad Pitt goes on a different mission where his father Clifford McBride was on to look for intelligent life, which made Clifford McBride a legend astronaut to stop the surge that kept knocking out the electronics on earth. Still, at the same time, Roy McBride had hope that he would find his father in the space, specifically on a planet named Jupiter alive. That entire Roy McBride’s journey from the start of the movie to near the end was almost so quiet, long, and so calming as it was minimalist at best. Even though there would be a couple of small scenes that could be action especially trying to fend off space’s pirates and Roy was forcing himself onto a rocketship without permission so that he could continue the journey.
Took him a very long yet calm, slow, and quiet journey to finally arrive the ship that his father Clifford McBride was on in the hope that he would find his father still alive in that ship near the Jupiter. Did he and was he? That is where I will stop here, and you watch the movie to find out yourself as I only spoil the tiny parts of the film while at the same time leaving the best pieces to you to find out or to watch! In my opinion, this movie is beautiful, so beautiful cinematic, so long and slow, especially that it is almost real seeing the space filled with the stars while being up close to different plants such as Jupiter, rings of Neptune, and others which put me in awe. I think that this probably chalked up as one of the best Brad Pitt’s movies; this shows that even it may be a minimal movie but as good as an actor that Brad Pitt is that he still has it and not only Brad Pitt but also Tommy Lee Jones. Even at minimal, it is beautiful, moving, fantasy, inspiring, and also a heartwrenching in some points of the movie. Bravo to Brad Pitt and Tommy Lee Jones because as minimal as this movie Ad Astra can be, it shows that they still act! I must also tip my hat off to James Gray for doing a beautiful job while keeping the movie minimal but at the same time not to bore.
I am rating this movie, Ad Astra 3.8. It is translated as very good, closer to great, and it does deserve it. The only thing that prevents the .2 from making it 4 is that I could see small yet unimportant scenes that could be improved, especially with the story, but even with .2 off, it is just like this movie is – minimal! I recommend Ad Astra for anyone who wants a movie to watch at night and who is prepared to absorb what the film is all about. Also, for anyone who is a fan of Brad Pitt or Tommy Lee Jones as I believe that this movie is pretty much what validates that Brad Pitt and Tommy Lee Jones are still great actors!
