Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)

I must confess that I was way late with this movie because I was so busy and more interested in watching many television shows than to watch a movie or any movies. On occasion, I would watch a movie, mostly when I felt that I have watched too many television shows for too long or that I want to make a few more interesting television shows to last so that I could have something to watch and be closer to the time for them to release another season. Two nights ago, I decided to watch a movie as I was in the mood for watching a movie instead of a television show. I have many movies that I have brought that I have not seen yet, especially the new movies that came out in 2019-2020, and Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) was one of them. Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is one of a few movies produced by DC Films under Warner Bros, released on February 7, 2020. DC Films is a production company that creates DC comics movies, and Harley Quinn is one along with other “birds” characters of DC comics. In case you don’t know DC comics well, Harley Quinn character is known for being Joker’s girl, and you would often find them in Batman’s comic books as even the ones who doesn’t follow DC Comics probably know that Joker is one of three most famous enemy of the Batman. Harley Quinn would often see wearing half black and half red leather suits with side ponytails and is considered an attractive woman by society.

Here is what Harley Quinn looks like in DC comics.

Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) movie is based on the Harley Quinn character from DC Comics. She was also in the Suicide Squad movie first, and this leads Harley Quinn to have her own movie; which I am glad that they decided to produce a movie about Harley Quinn because it was about the time they did. For many decades, DC Films under DC Comics would often only produce films or television shows with the most popular heroes such as Batman, Superman, Supergirl, Wonder Woman, Green Arrow, and The Flash but not their smaller characters (whether they are supervillains or heroes) such as Harley Quinn, Cyborg, Black Canary, Catwoman, Batgirl, Hawkman and others until a few years ago as they started doing television shows of Flash, Green Arrow, Supergirl, Batwoman, Titans, etc. Harley Quinn just had hers if you exclude Suicide Squad because it was more of others with Harley Quinn in it, but this movie is with Harley Quinn leading the front.

Be warned that this is spoilers, in case if you haven’t watched the movie yet. This movie, Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), started out complaining about her breakup with the Joker. She would be seen at a club place hoping to get over their breakup, ended up doing what Harley Quinn was well-known for, which is to make chaos, but this time she made a new friend without realizing. It pretty much started everything from that club. That club owner named Roman Sionis went after her when he discovered that Harley Quinn was trying to keep a little girl named Cassandra Cain safe because Cassandra Cain is known as a pickpocketer. Cassandra Cain ended up stealing Roman Sionis’s diamond after pickpocketing his friend or some assistant. Harley Quinn was keeping Cassandra Cain in her own way, again with the help of that new friend that she didn’t realize that she looked after her; that new friend was also trying to keep Cassandra Cain safe, but while Harley Quinn and Cassandra Cain is on the run that new friend was an inside person already being Roman Sionis’s new driver so she would try to keep Cassandra Cain out of their way with the help of Harley Quinn without realizing that was what they were doing. That new friend I refer to is another character in DC Comics. She is called Black Canary, and while Harley Quinn was on the run with Cassandra Cain to keep Roman Sionis from getting Cassandra Cain, someone else and many others were hunting for Harley Quinn for revenge. One of them is called Huntress; she ended up being an ally of Harley Quinn later, helping her with Cassandra Cain. Another person being hunt by was Renee Montoya, who worked with the police department. After chasing Harley Quinn, getting closer with the help of Black Canary without realizing that Black Canary was actually helping Renee to chase after Harley Quinn when Black Canary thought that Renee was helping Black Canary to help Harley Quinn with Cassandra Cain.

Through all of that, Harley Quinn being hunted by several people who want revenge while being attacked by Roman Sionis hired people for bounties after Cassandra Cain, and from there, it seems that Harley Quinn was ending up to be a hero even if it wasn’t her intention because she was known as a supervillain alongside the Joker since she was Joker’s woman. It was fascinating to watch how Harley Quinn transforms her character from being a supervillain to trying to keep a little girl safe but in Harley Quinn’s own way because Harley Quinn is Harley Quinn after all.

I think DC Films and Warner Bros did Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) pretty good. As usual, Margot Robbie played Harley Quinn well; Margot Robbie also played the Harley Quinn character in Suicide Squad, so it fitted to have Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn in her movie, and I think that they picked the right person to play Harley Quinn who is Margot Robbie. That goes the same for many other casts, including Jurnee Smollett as Dinah Lance, Black Canary. In this movie, you are going to see a bad girl who happens to be trying to save a little girl who is a pickpocketer that ends up getting caught when Black Canary recognized her because Ella Jay Basco, who plays Cassandra Cain, lives in the same apartments building that Dinah Lance aka Black Canary lives in. I do think that DC Films and Warner Bros should make the movie dirtier. Even though there are a few cusses in it, a little blood is in it, but they forget that Harley Quinn likes to flaunt her sexiness. It was almost like a rated R movie while trying so hard to keep it a PG. The people who follow DC comics for decades, who are immersed with DC comics, knows that Harley Quinn herself is a so R-rated character. I also think that they should have stretched the movie, put a little more story in it, and portray Harley Quinn better. But overall, I liked Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) movie. Is it better than Suicide Squad? Not exactly, but it would be better to bring that personality of Harley Quinn from Suicide Squad to Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn).

I am rating Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) a 3.3, which translates a little bit more than good. I would recommend Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) for anyone who is in the mood to watch a bad girl movie one weekend night. Anyone who is a huge fan of DC Comics might find the movie a bit disappointing because it doesn’t truly portray Harley Quinn, yet it is still watchable. If anyone doesn’t follow DC Comics, they might like this movie more because it would be viewed as one of the breakup movies.

Bottom Line:

Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) movie based on a character from DC Comics, Harley Quinn. It is somewhat a spinoff from Suicide Squad, but this time with Harley Quinn taking the lead. Harley Quinn is going through a breakup with Joker; while trying to get over their breakup, the supervillain Harley Quinn creates chaos but becomes somewhat a hero for keeping a little girl safe while being hunt by many people who wants revenge on Harley Quinn. DC Films with Warner Bros did the movie good; Margot Robbie was the right person to play Harley Quinn, which she also did in Suicide Squad. The only downside to the film is that they did not bring the same personality of Harley Quinn from Suicide Squad to Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). It seems as if the film is a rated R but trying so hard to keep it a PG, which isn’t something that Harley Quinn is known for. Harley Quinn is a lot more than R-rated herself.

I am rating Birds Of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) movie 3.5, which translates a little bit more than good. I recommend Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) for anyone who is in the mood to watch a bad girl movie one weekend night.
