Two nights ago, I finally found the time to watch a movie titled Free Guy. Free Guy movie was released last year on August 13th, in 2021, so I have been putting it off because I have been very busy with other things such as running all of my businesses and barely could find the time for anything until I finally was in the mood to watch a movie, so I picked Free Guy to watch out of many unwatched new movies I have waiting for me to watch. Free Guy movie is an action, adventure, and comedy movie starring Ryan Reynolds as its leading actor with Jodie Comer, Taika Waititi, Lil Rel Howery, Joe Keery, Utkarsh Ambudkar, and Channing Tatum.
With that being said, now that I have watched the movie Free Guy, I will do a movie review for you readers!
It started pretty well, as the beginning of many movies usually does, and then gave us an idea of where the film would lead us to the end or let us know what the movie would be about. When I saw the beginning, I thought that any gamers who watch this movie would be excited and understand how it works, especially being starting over and over again – respawning. I believe that this movie pretty much portrays a role-playing video game, almost like a SIM video game but with action and its own story. Some people or reviewers say the genres for the Free Guy movie are adventure, action, and comedy, which they are correct. Still, I would add romance to it because, in my opinion, it is a romantic comedy movie but with adventure and action on the side because if you watched the movie, then you saw that he decided to become something that no one expected by having a romantic interest in the woman (Millie) in the film. He was not supposed to do that, but the people who programmed some role-playing game with artificial intelligence (AI) created a story they expected Guy to do. Still, then because of the appearance of Millie, Guy somehow had a change in his program, which many gamers would call a glitch because as soon as he saw Millie, everything had changed. His perception has changed by recognizing that he is in a game, although not knowing that he is not real. It started with Guy deciding to order something different than the usual, which is what he was not programmed to order. Still, there was a glitch in his artificial intelligence, so he ordered something else. It wasn’t significant, though, he didn’t notice what was a big deal until he saw Millie, and that is when everything truly changed for him, along with the movie itself or, should I say, the game? Because in this movie, we watch several gamers playing the game, and all of the players have their characters, but Guy was what they call NPC, which stands for non-playable character.
There are a few NPC characters, but the gamers are playing the majority of the characters in the game. It was interesting to see how one small thing changed everything, especially for an NPC character who just did something that the game programmers didn’t forsee. As soon as the game company who programmed the game, especially the head of the company, noticed that Guy was going off the scripts that the game programmers set him to do and they suddenly started to do everything they could to destroy him or have him restored to bring him back to whatever the story that they have set for Guy. That includes having the programmers themselves playing the game trying to kill Guy, hoping that he will get back on the page when he respawns, but they fail as Guy outsmarted them. Then with the help of Millie, he was able to escape everything that the head of the game company and its programmers tried to do with him, so they decided to resort to something that would risk the game company itself by destroying the servers for the game.
But the problem is, remember me mentioning Millie? Millie is one of their players who happens to be a programmer for the video. As she was the original programmer and another partner, the head of the game company stole the game from them both. Hence, both of them just became game programmers instead of being in an executive positions such as the head of the game company. After the game company discovered that Millie was the one who had been helping Guy to escape and keep him from being shut down, she had to rely on her partner, who also programmed the game to keep the Guy from being killed off. The head of the game company wants Guy to be killed off because they were getting ready to launch a second version of the game but couldn’t because Guy was getting all the attention, knowing that as long as Guy is very likable that there is a chance the second version of the game wouldn’t be successful. That game is called Free City; they were getting ready to launch Free City 2.
With that everything going on, how can they save Guy? The original programmers for the Free City game remembered that they had an original version (a beta version) of the game before Free City was launched to the public. The original game was hidden in the game Free City. So, to save Guy, he has to cross from the Free City game to their original Free City game (beta version, basically) before the head of the game company and others destroy the servers that hosted the Free City game. That is where the action comes into the play, along with the help of Millie as a player within the Free City game and another co-founder (partner) sneaking in a while still at the building of the game company to give Guy some help, such as creating new paths or a shortcut to get Guy to the other side of the game in a hurry hoping that Guy would arrive there to cross over before the servers get destroyed.
Did he make it? That I am not going to say because that is something you got to watch to find out! There is so much more than this; the movie is action-packed, a lot more than what I shared, he has comedic moments in the film, and the appearance of Channing Tatum was weird, to be honest. I don’t think Channing Tatum is needed for that character in the Free Guy movie, but they have him as a guest acting. In the end, it was bittersweet, but at the same time, I think that this movie should do better than that because it felt like reading an unfinished story or a film with no end, which can be annoying, in my opinion. Having Ryan Reynolds as the main character (Guy) in Free Guy movie, I think, is a good choice and Jodie Comer for the Millie character and other actors, but I think Channing Tatum is unnecessary. The bottom line is that the whole Free Guy movie is like watching a video game film, except it is more real and more depth. But the story/script for Free Guy could be better, especially for the movie’s ending, and it felt like they left me a few questions unanswered. Many films or television shows would give us the questions with answers to them eventually in an entire movie, but this one doesn’t, as it gives me the questions and no answers. Maybe it is because it is meant to be like that so that they can produce Free Guy 2 or something? I am not sure, but if they aren’t going to make a sequel for the Free Guy movie, then this Free Guy movie will be one of the unfinished movies or movies that leaves us wondering what happens when something happens at the end.
I must rate Free Guy movie as it is, a 3.4, which translates it as almost being a really good movie, but one or two things stop it from being a really good movie: the 3.5 ratings. Would I recommend the Free Guy movie? I would, but I think the film would be suitable for a weekend movie thing or if you are a gamer. Free Guy has great cinematic going, with the right actor as the main character like Ryan Reynolds which I think is fitting, Jodie Comer portrayed Millie well and some others but also few actors weren’t needed or unnecessary such as Channing Tatum which I have nothing against as I think he is a good actor but just not for the Free Guy movie.
