I want to congratulate Troy Kotsur for winning the Oscar for Best Supporting actor and congratulate everyone involved in a movie named CODA for winning the Oscars for best picture and best adapted screenplay on March 27th! That wasn’t all; Troy Kotsur and CODA have won several awards before winning any awards from the Oscars. They won several SAG awards, such as outstanding performance by an actor in a supporting role in a motion picture (for Troy Kotsur), the best theatrical motion picture. They also won some BAFTA (Almost like Oscars but in British) and many more awards. Troy Kotsur became the second Deaf person to own an Oscar, he is the first Deaf male to win an oscar but the second to win the oscar, and the first Deaf person to win the oscar was none other than Marlee Matlin (along with the first Deaf female to win the Oscar). Marlee Matlin won the Oscar for her movie Children of a Lesser God back in 1987, so the gap for another Deaf actor or actress to win another one is enormous as it has been 35 years, so it was a way overdue, in my opinion. I have been seeing a lot of Deaf people on social media starts to use a mix of American Sign Language and International Sign Language which can be very confusing for a lot of people including myself. What is more bothersome is that some copy the signs from International Sign Language with American Sign Language, telling people that they are American Sign Language when they aren’t even American Sign Language because they are signs from International Sign Language and uses them with American Sign Language can be very confusing for some. There are some people in a group calls “ASL That!” where they would learn some new signs for some words in American Sign Language obviously since the group are all about ASL aka American Sign Language and I have noticed that some Deaf people along with other people who know sign language (interpreters or codas) in the group or even outside the group would use the sign for people from International Sign Language thinking that it is the new sign or modernized sign for American Sign Language when they are not as they are being copied from International Sign Language. The other day I have stumbled upon some researches and watched some videos of a laboratories company named Starkey Hearing Foundation that have not just angered me but angered several individuals in the Deaf community. Starkey is a company that make hearing technology for any individuals that have a problem with hearing and Starkey have led several people to think that Starkey is the hero as it is what Starkey would want you to see them as but they are not really the hero that you thought. There are several articles or videos that have shown where there are public figures individuals such as some of United States of American former presidents like George W. Bush, Bill Clinton and our running for president Hillary Clinton gives the hearing aids to some of the people who are either Deaf or Hard of Hearing. Even the Starkey have said that their hearing technology is the treatment or the solution for anyone who is Deaf or Hard of Hearing just upsets the Deaf community even more because it is misleading as there is several Deaf or Hard of Hearing individuals have said that they limits their freedom more than they have.
