This latest Tomb Raider movie released in 2018 is not the Tomb Raider that you would expect from Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle Of Life. Angelina Jolie was a perfect actress for the Lara Croft role, she did it very well, and Alicia Vikander also did the Lara Croft well in the latest Tomb Raider movie. I look at this Tomb Raider movie as a reboot movie because if you watched the other Tomb Raider movies starring Angelina Jolie, then you watch this movie Tomb Raider, and you will immediately realize that it is so similar but in different ways. Before I start writing my review, please be aware that this review will have some spoilers, so if you have not watched the movie, look away.
As I said earlier, both movies, which I am referring to the Lara Croft movies and this latest Tomb Raider movie, are similar but different. From the beginning of the Tomb Raider movie, you will see Lara Croft is going through her father’s loss after discovering that her father has left her an inheritance. One of them is Croft’s Manor, where all of the things that her father has stored from his adventures as he is known for looking for mystery things. So, in Croft’s manor, it led Lara Croft to start her adventure where her father left, is hoping to see what happens there with her father and discovered that her father was murdered by a man who was wanting to find a mystery himself but later discovered that her father was alive after all when she stumbled upon him in a cave after realizing that her father tracked her without him knowing that it was his daughter in the jungle. Hence, she begins chasing him to the cave, where she gets to see him close-up to the point that she realized that her father is still alive. When she found out that her father was still alive in that case, she was injured from a fight against that man and the army of his who was supposedly murdered her father. Her father did not want to believe that Lara Croft was there; he had thought that it was a delusion until Lara Croft had shown her father that she is there in person after sharing a gesture that both only know. She then passed out when her father was treating her injury.
The next day Lara Croft woke up, thinking that her father had already left because it was a pattern that she was used to, but when she walked outside of the cave and seen that her father was still there trimming his beard, responding that it wasn’t his pattern but hers.
There were a few good action scenes in the movie, although it was only in the middle of the film and then at the end of the movie. From the shipwrecking, then swam to the island, hit by that man who Lara Croft found out that it was the same one who supposedly murdered her father. From there, she realized that she had stumbled upon a militant area in command of that man with several people that he slaved them to do the digging for his discovery. Lara Croft is known for being an adventurous person; in this movie Tomb Raider, we rarely get to see it until at the end of the movie, and at the end of the film, we would right away realize that it’s the classic move that Lara Croft is known for – running through while being crumbled upon, dodging through the broke things, chasing after that man and whatnot. I think that there is a lot of missed opportunities in the Tomb Raider movie, if you watched the Lara Croft Tomb Raider movies, you would see a lot more action and adventures, but in this latest movie, we only get to see them a little bit after the middle of the film, so I admit that was a bit disappointing for me.
Earlier I said that I looked at this more of a reboot movie; it is somewhat that, and that is where I am disappointed the most. It is more of a reboot from both Lara Croft Tomb Raider movies, but cramming both altogether and watered it down is the best way to think of the latest Tomb Raider movie. It is somewhat dull, too, as I said that there weren’t many action or adventures that we would typically see from Lara Croft as we would see in Tomb Raider’s games. It was almost like a hurried movie, cramming both Lara Croft Tomb Raider movies and then water it down – here’s the Tomb Raider reboot movie! I wished that they would have start Tomb Raider anew, with a new story that is not similar or familiar from the Angelina Jolie’s Lara Croft Tomb Raider movies. If they had used some story from Tomb Raider’s games, that would be a good movie for everyone to watch, but unfortunately, they did not pick anything from Tomb Raider games. The only excitement I get out of the Tomb Raider movie was at the end of the film. She was escaping the crumbling underground, and the shipwrecking was pretty decent, especially with Daniel Wu.
Would I recommend this Tomb Raider (2018) movie? Yes and no. It would be an ok movie to watch if you are by yourself and it is on the weekend that you have nothing else to watch. If they are going to make another Tomb Raider and they want to make it successful, they are going to have to start a scratch instead of picking some from Angelina Jolie’s Tomb Raider movies but still keep Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft because I think she did it well even with bored to death story of the movie. I am rating the Tomb Raider movie a 2.3, which translates a-ok.

Bottom Line
The latest Tomb Raider movie was a dull movie, somewhat a reboot of the Lara Croft Tomb Raider movies. The best way to describe the movie is that it’s a reboot but, simultaneously, cramming both Lara Croft’s movies starring Angelina Jolie into this Tomb Raider and then watered it down. Only exciting that this movie Tomb Raider had was the past the middle of the movie and as well the scene of shipwrecking that ended up Lara Croft and Lu Ren on the island and Lara Croft’s escape from the crumbling underground. They should have started from scratch with Tomb Raider, if they had followed Tomb Raider’s games, they would be a successful movie, but instead, they decided to follow the older Tomb Raider movies but watered it down. I do and don’t recommend the Tomb Raider movies. It is an ok movie for someone who has nothing else to watch on the weekend alone. I am rating the Tomb Raider (2018) 2.3, which translates a-ok.
