Thought?:
I feel that Dark Phoenix is more of a watered-down X-Men franchise film, previous X-Men films were more excited, thrilling and action-packed but this latest and likely to be the final X-Men mainline story films Dark Phoenix which was a sequel to X-Men: Apocalypse (2016) is more of a watered-down X-Men movie. In my opinion, since it is likely to be the end of X-Men’s mainline story in X-Men franchise films, they should have gone out with a bang. Still, instead, they ended it with a “good enough” final movie in a sense as if they were rushing to complete the mainline of X-Men for the X-Men franchise films to get over with it.
Originally the movie was named Dark Phoenix, but they then added X-Men to it, and I believe that it was a mistake because if they slap X-Men’s name to Dark Phoenix, then this would drastically increase the expectation of X-Men fans. I am one of the fans, I was disappointed, but at the same time I do admit that there were a couple of good scenes that I enjoyed but I could, and I am sure that you probably would too definitely tell that Dark Phoenix isn’t an X-Men film. All along, it was expected that this movie is based on one character from X-Men, Jean Grey. If they had titled the film something different other than using the X-Men (like omitting X-Men while keeping Dark Phoenix as they originally intended), then maybe that would be a bit more forgiving. Like DC did for their films with Green Lantern, Aquaman, Batman, Superman, and whatnot, so each of these characters has their own movies instead of as a whole, almost like Justice League.Â
I think this might appeal to some children more than it would for adults. It started decently; it was cinematic, especially that we get to see how Jean Grey became what she is even though Jean Grey had the power all along ever since she was a kid. Still, we get to see what pretty much makes her ability a superpower. While learning about her strength, she was pretty much lonely, especially that she was one to cause her parents’ death and then found out that her father was still alive, but it wasn’t all good news. Gave up on X-Men, but X-Men didn’t give up on her even after she did more than harm to some of the X-Men members. In the end, we would see Professor X and Magneto pretty much retired and play a game of chess. I think that the ending from X-Men: Dark Phoenix should have been the scene for the X-Men: Apocalypse then that would be the right movie for the X-Men franchise to go out with a bang as their final, but they had to make the Dark Phoenix their final one instead which is a definitely not better or a good enough movie for X-Men to end it with for their franchise.
I only think that I enjoyed was that the ending more than the rest of the movie and there were a few quotes that had me thinking “yes!” especially when the women (Storm, Jean Grey, Raven, and the likes) said that the X-Men should be the X-Women! Maybe that is a hint? Who knows, but again a couple of scenes along with a couple of good quotes/lines and in the ending are the only thing good that came out of X-Men: Dark Phoenix while the rest were not so good. Many of these casting for these characters weren’t original X-Men actors. However, with a few exceptions, especially Raven or Beast but, understandably, nothing can stay the same forever, so keep that in mind when you decide to watch the Dark Phoenix that many of the actors weren’t from the older X-Men films. I almost want to rate it 1.8, because the ending was decent and the same for a couple of scenes out of all (like a crumbled piece out of the entire pizza), not so good movie brings that to respectable rating 2.3. Would I recommend X-Men: Dark Phoenix? If you are very bored, sure, but if you are a huge fan of X-Men, then I say to be prepared to be disappointed, and if this is for a child then it might be entertaining for them because I think it appeals more to the children than it does for adults. Overall, would I recommend myself to watch it after that I have watched it? No. But that shouldn’t stop you from watching it though because everyone’s opinion varies.
